Abstract

Abstract

Purpose: To 1) identify problems of elderly diabetic patients with insulin injection in drug storage and injection skills 2) To describe the problems of elderly diabetic patients with insulin injection in various fields 2.1) Physical aspect 2.2) Psychological 2.3) Social aspect and 2.4) self-care ability.

Design : Descriptive research

Materials and Methods : The study was conducted in patients who were registered at the Continuing care center at Changhan hospital and received at least one home visit between October 2019 to February 2020 and using the tool to record the home visit. Data were analyed using frequency, percentage.

Main  findings:  The results of the study of 26 subjects were 16 female (61.5%X, 10 males (38.5%),  aged between 60-83 years old. Most of the problem storage insulin injections were stored in the refrigerator lid , under the freezer and storage without refrigeration , respectively. For injection skills was found that the sample group still had the wrong injection skills. Most of wrong skill was wrong dose rotated, injection at the same body area , respectively. Finding for problems through in-depth interviews, the most common problems was physical problem 17 patients, self -care ability problem 7 patients and social problem 1 patients.

Conclusion and Recommendations : The results of this study can be used to 1) provide on-site service to accurate drug storage and injection sills review physical examination to assess the skin at the injection site of patient. 2) Engaging caregivers and community networks to assist patients by transferring knowledge and skills in the use of insulin injections. However, this study was aimed at patients who were registered with and continuing care center if need to study the problems covered, a study of all insulin injected elderly diabetic patients should be conducted to identify the problem and the nature of the problem in order to provide services that are more appropriate to the patient’s age.
