Abstract

Purposes: This study aimed to compare activities of daily living (ADL) among stroke patients before and after receiving a physical rehabilitation program and to assess their satisfaction with rehabilitation services at Srisomdet Hospital, Roi Et Province, Thailand.

Study design: This study employed a pre-experimental research design using a one-group pretest-posttest design. The study was conducted from October 1, 2024, to September 30, 2025. The participants were 30 stroke patients who received physical rehabilitation services at Srisomdet Hospital, Roi Et Province, and met the predetermined inclusion criteria.

Materials and Methods: The research instruments consisted of a demographic data record form, the Barthel Index for assessing activities of daily living, and a satisfaction questionnaire regarding rehabilitation services. Data were analyzed using frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation. The ADL scores before and after rehabilitation were compared using a paired t-test.

Main findings: The majority of participants were male (60.00%), and 40.00% were aged 61–70 years. Before rehabilitation, 20 participants (66.67%) had a Barthel Index score of 12 points or higher. The mean ADL score before rehabilitation was 11.05 (SD. = 3.68), while the mean score after rehabilitation was 13.68 (SD. = 3.45). The mean ADL score increased by 2.63 points, and the post-rehabilitation score was significantly higher than the pre-rehabilitation score (p < .001). Overall satisfaction with rehabilitation services was at the highest level (Mean = 4.47, SD. = 0.51). The highest satisfaction score was for safety of service (Mean = 4.63, SD. = 0.49), followed by courtesy and service provision (Mean = 4.57, SD. = 0.50). The lowest mean score was for continuity of follow-up (Mean = 4.20, SD. = 0.61), which was rated at a high level.

Conclusion and recommendations: Following physical rehabilitation, stroke patients demonstrated significantly higher ADL scores than before rehabilitation. Participants also reported high to very high satisfaction with rehabilitation services. However, because this study used a one-group design without a control group, the findings should be interpreted with caution regarding causal effects. Rehabilitation services for stroke patients should be provided continuously and tailored to each patient's level of functional ability. The Barthel Index should be systematically assessed before and after rehabilitation to monitor outcomes. Family members and caregivers should be provided with appropriate knowledge and skills to support continued rehabilitation at home. A continuous follow-up system should also be developed, particularly for patients who have difficulty accessing rehabilitation services. Future studies should consider including a control group or using a quasi-experimental design to strengthen the evidence regarding the effectiveness of rehabilitation programs.
