Enhancing Emotional Intelligence and Early Childhood Parenting Skills through Family-Engaged Positive Discipline: An Evaluative Study at Ban Khwao Health Promoting Hospital
Keywords:
Parenting skills, Emotional Quotient (EQ), Early childhood, Positive disciplineAbstract
Purposes: To compare the mean scores of parental behaviors and emotional quotient (EQ) development among early childhood children at Ban Khwao Health Promoting Hospital.
Study design: A quasi-experimental research design using a one-group pretest-posttest approach.
Materials and Methods: The sample comprised 35 parent-child pairs recruited via cluster sampling. The children were aged 3–5 years (male or female) with suspected developmental delays in at least one domain as assessed by the Developmental Surveillance and Promotion Manual (DSPM). Simple random sampling without replacement was used to select the participants. Data were collected using questionnaires and assessment forms, and analyzed using frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, and paired t-test. The statistical significance level was set at a 95% confidence interval.
Main finding: Following the program, parents demonstrated significantly higher mean scores in child-rearing skills regarding child development promotion and overall skills compared to baseline (p = .041 and p < .001, respectively). The mean differences for development promotion and overall skills increased by 0.289 (95%CI; 0.013, 0.566) and 0.170 (95%CI; 0.017, 0.357), with moderate effect sizes (Cohen's d = 0.358 and 0.311, respectively). However, parental scores in emotional bonding and positive discipline showed no significant differences compared to pre-intervention (p = .291 and .134, respectively). Regarding early childhood EQ, children exhibited significantly higher mean scores in the "Smart" (good nature/moral), "Happy," and overall EQ domains post-intervention (p < .001, p = .017, and p < .001, respectively). The mean scores increased by 1.518 (95%CI; 1.302, 1.734), 1.496 (95%CI; 1.289, 1.702), and 0.340 (95%CI; 0.164, 0.517) with moderate effect sizes for the "Smart" (d = 0.661) and "Happy" (d = 0.422) domains, and a moderate-to-high effect size for the overall EQ score (d = 0.664). Conversely, the EQ domain of "Intelligence" (competence) showed no significant difference from baseline (p = .285).
Conclusion and recommendations: The developed innovation effectively enhances parental skills and children's emotional quotient. Therefore, this program should be scaled up and implemented in other health-promoting hospitals, with module enhancements focusing on positive discipline and emotional bonding. Future research should incorporate a control group and long-term follow-up assessments to validate the sustainable efficacy of the program.
