Developing a Model for Enhancing the Capacity of Healthcare Personnel in Caring for Critical Emergency Patients During Transfer Moeiwadi Hospital, Roi Et Province

Purposes : This study aimed to develop and evaluate a model for enhancing the capacity of healthcare personnel in providing care for emergency patients with critical conditions during hospital transfer in Moeiwadi Hospital, Roi Et.
Study Design : Action Research.
Materials and Methods : An action research methodology was employed with a sample of 29 registered nurses and emergency medical technicians at Moeiwadi Hospital, Roi Et Province, Thailand. The model development process involved training sessions to increase knowledge and practical skills, as well as the creation of a practice guideline manual.
Main findings : The capacity-building model for healthcare personnel comprised four main components: 1) theoretical training on critical emergency care, 2) practical skills training using a peer-to-peer learning approach, 3) development of emergency medication preparation guidelines, and 4) creation of a comprehensive manual for critical emergency patient transfer. The results showed that after implementing the model, the average knowledge score of the personnel increased from 14.72 (SD. = 1.8) to 17.48 (SD. = 1.3) points, while the practical skills score increased from 19.28 (SD. = 2.3) to 24.59 (SD. = 1.1) points. Both aspects showed statistically significant differences (p < .001). Furthermore, the average patient transfer delay decreased from 60.0 ± 10.5 minutes to 45.0 ± 7.8 minutes, and the incidence of adverse events reduced from 5.0% ± 1.2% to 2.0% ± 0.5%. The development of this model also resulted in high satisfaction among the personnel, with an average score of 4.90 (SD. = 0.310) out of 5.
Conclusion and recommendations : This study demonstrates that the developed model for enhancing personnel capacity in caring for critical emergency patients during transfer can significantly increase the knowledge and skills of the personnel, reduce transfer delays, and improve patient safety. The findings suggest policy implications for expanding the application of this model to other community hospitals to further improve the quality of emergency patient transfer at the national level.
