Factors Predicting Preventive Behaviors for COVID-19 Infection among Emergency Nurses

Abstract

This predictive research aimed to study the predictive factors for preventive behaviors for COVID-19 infection among emergency nurses, including anxiety levels about infection, knowledge about infection prevention, and attitude towards infection prevention. A total of 73 emergency nurses from Ramathibodi Hospital were selected through purposive sampling. The research instruments, comprised of five assessments, demonstrated a content validity index (CVI) of 1.0. The instruments included: 1) a General Information Questionnaire  2) an Infection Anxiety Scale  3) an Infection Prevention Knowledge Test with a reliability assessed using Kuder-Richardson Formula 20 (KR-20) yielding a coefficient of 0.26  4) an Attitudes toward Infection Prevention Practices Scale, with a reliability of 0.85 and 5) an Infection Prevention Behavioral Practice Scale with a reliability of 0.86. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and multiple regressions applying the Enter method.

The results showed that the participants had a relatively high level of anxiety about infection, a moderate level of knowledge about infection prevention, a low level of attitude toward infection prevention practices, and a high level of infection prevention behavioral practices. The analysis of factors predicting preventive behaviors for COVID-19 infection showed that anxiety about infection, knowledge about infection prevention, and attitude towards infection prevention practices combined significantly predicted preventive behaviors for COVID-19, accounting for 11% of the variance. Specifically, anxiety about infection was a statistically significant predictor of the participants’ preventive behaviors for COVID-19 infection at the .05 level. The findings of this research provide a foundation for administrators to enhance the infection control systems for COVID-19 and other emerging infectious diseases.
