Abstract

Sleep quality is crucial for the well-being of the elderly because it directly impacts their physical and mental health. When the elderly experience sleep problems, these issues can significantly affect them.  This cross-sectional descriptive research aimed to investigate the sleep quality of elderly individuals and identify the factors associated with their sleep quality in Ubon Ratchathani Province. The sample for this study was comprised of 380 non-dependent elderly individuals selected through multi-stage random sampling. The research instruments used in the study were the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), a sleep quality interview specifically designed for the elderly, and the Sleep Disturbance Factor Assessment Questionnaire. To assess the reliability of the instruments the Cronbach's alpha coefficient method was employed, yielding a reliability score of 0.79. Additionally, descriptive and inferential statistics, such as Pearson's Correlations and Chi-Square tests, were employed for data analysis.

The results revealed that the majority of the elderly participants had good sleep quality. Age and family relationships exhibited statistically significantly positive correlations with the sleep quality of the elderly at            p-value < .01 and .05, respectively. Conversely, physical sleep disturbances demonstrated a negative association with sleep quality among the elderly at p-value < .01. These findings can serve as guidelines for health care providers to promote elderly care management aimed at enhancing sleep quality. Additionally, they provide fundamental information for organizing age-specific activities to promote better sleep and addressing family relationship issues to alleviate sleep problems experienced by the elderly.
