Abstract

This descriptive study aimed to explore the diabetic situation, effects and health determinants of diabetic patients and to analyze the way to promote health for diabetic patients which is consistent with their lifestyles.Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion was used as the conceptual framework and Community Health Impact Assessment (CHIA) was used as the study process. There were 3 steps as followings: (1) exploring diabetic situation in the community; (2) evaluating health impacts on the patients, and (3) making decisions. The study participants included diabetic patients, care givers, community leaders, village health volunteers, local authorities, and health care providers.

The results of the study revealed that diabetes has impacted patients’ lifestyle in terms of food consumption and sleep.Elderly patients had to rely on family members for food, taking medicine/injection and visiting the doctor. Most patients had poor control of blood glucose levels due to rush lifestyle, economic problem and unhealthy community environmentand lack of awareness related to diet and exercise behavior modification. Therefore, the way to promote health for diabetic patients in community included food management skill development, exerciseencouragement and healthy environment development in terms of growing organic vegetable and initiating healthy food restaurants in the community.
