Effect of Empowerment and Self-Esteem Promoting Program among the Elderly with Depression in Home for the Aged

Abstract

                This research was a two-group quasi-experimental research, measured before and after the experiment. The objective is to study the effect of Empowerment and Self-Esteem Promoting Program in the elderly with depression in home for the aged. The subjects were elderly with mild to moderate depression in home for the aged Nakhonratchasima province and Lopburi province. The purposive sampling consisted of 38 older persons the experimental group underwent empowerment and self-esteem promoting program was performed for 12 weeks and the comparison group received conventional care. The instruments were self-esteem questionnaire, Thai Geriatric Depression Scale. The reliability of    self-esteem questionnaire, Thai Geriatric Depression Scale (TGDS) were 0.84 and 0.93 respectively. The data were analyzed using frequency, percentage, Median, Wilcoxon Signed Ranks test and Mann - Whitney U test

          The research results were found that

1. After the experiment, the experimental group had higher self-esteem than before the experiment. And higher than the comparison group with statistical significance at the level of .05
2. After the experiment, the experimental group had lower depression than before the experiment. And lower than the comparison group With statistical significance at the level of .05
