The objective of this action research was to develop community-based learning process in waste management at the source. The setting of this study was a rural community in Maha Sarakham Province. The participants were 62 individuals, consisting of 30 household representatives in each village and 32 involving people. General and waste situation data were collected by using a questionnaire, focus group discussion, and participant observation. Data were analyzed using percentage, mean and content analysis.
The results of this study showed that 1) in terms of waste situation and management, most of wastes were generated by daily activities and agricultural occupation-related activities. Waste disposal method was conducted by stacking them up on the ground to be burned. Waste mismanagement had negative impacts on health and environment. Community-based learning in waste management at the source was limited and not comprehensive. In terms of needs for the support, there was the need for correct waste management at the source under the support of related agencies. 2) there were three main strategies to develop the learning process including.2.1) learning from shared consideration of problems and coping. 2.2) learning from shared thinking and planning for solving problems and 2.3)learning from action. The performance results were presented and evaluated for proving the plan. The action plan consisted of campaign, educating waste management, organizing a field trip, knowledge exchange , creating agreements and collaborative learning networks, preparing media and a manual on waste management and selecting the family model of waste management, and 3) the results of change after implementation showed that the participants and local people in the community improved their learning process and created new network. Besides, related officers and agencies participated more in community-based learning process. The proposal was prepared towards sub-district arena to drive to be a waste management policy.
