Background: As the number of elderly individuals with hypertension rises, caregivers increasingly face mental health challenges such as depression, anxiety, and stress due to the ongoing demands of caregiving. To enhance caregivers' long-term quality of life, it is essential to investigate the factors that predict these mental health conditions. This research seeks to explore the elements affecting the mental health of caregivers for elderly individuals with hypertension within the community.
Methods: This research is a predictive descriptive study involving a sample of 114 caregivers of elderly patients with hypertension in Warin Chamrap District, Ubon Ratchathani Province. The participants were selected through multi-stage random sampling. The research instruments, which were validated, included a personal information questionnaire, a self-efficacy scale, a positive thinking scale, a health literacy scale, and a resource support scale, with reliability coefficients of .89, .85, .90, and .92, respectively. Additionally, the caregivers' mental health status was evaluated using the Depression Anxiety Stress Scales-21 (DASS-21), which assesses levels of depression, anxiety, and stress, with reliability coefficients of .80, .76, and .82, respectively. Data analysis was conducted using descriptive statistics and stepwise multiple regression analysis.
Results: Income, self-efficacy, and optimism are key predictors of caregivers' mental health. Income is linked to depression (Beta = -0.218) and anxiety (Beta = -0.227), while self-efficacy (Beta = -0.241) and optimism (Beta = -0.222) account for a 12 percent prediction of stress, with statistical significance. Other factors, such as age, duration of caregiving, health literacy, and access to resources, do not predict mental health status.
Conclusion: The findings of this study underscore the significance of fostering income generation, self-efficacy, and a positive attitude. These elements serve as essential guidelines for planning support for caregivers of elderly individuals with hypertension, ensuring their mental well-being.
