Effect of Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs) Anti-depressant Drugs on Bone Remodeling in Orthodontic Treatment

Abstract

The selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are widely used in the treatment of depression and other psychological disturbances. Not only SSRIs upregulate the serotonin in the brain, but SSRIs also affect the mediators for bone mineral density changes, which may correspond to bone remodeling and root resorption during orthodontic tooth movement. The objectives of this review article are to describe the role of serotonin, SSRIs in bone metabolism, the effect of SSRIs on alveolar bone remodeling and root resorption.
