โรคมะเร็งที่มีการแพร่กระจายในช่องท้อง (peritoneal metastasis) นับได้ว่าเป็นโรคมะเร็งระยะสุดท้าย การรักษาด้วยการประคับประคองโดยการให้ยาเคมีบำบัดเป็นเพียงการช่วยชะลอให้การดำเนินโรคช้าลงเท่านั้น สาเหตุการเสียชีวิตมักเกิดจากภาวะแทรกซ้อนเฉพาะที่ โดยเฉพาะจากลำไส้อุดตัน ขาดสารอาหาร หรือเกิดจากผลข้างเคียงจากการให้ยาเคมีบำบัด ปัจจุบันพบว่าโรคมะเร็งที่มีการแพร่กระจายในช่องท้องมาจากโรคมะเร็งบางชนิด เช่น มะเร็งลำไส้ใหญ่มะเร็งรังไข่ มะเร็งชนิด pseudomyxoma peritonei มะเร็งเยื่อบุช่องท้อง และมะเร็งกระเพาะอาหาร การรักษาผู้ป่วยเหล่านี้ด้วยการผ่าตัด และให้ยาเคมีบำบัดอุณหภูมิสูงในช่องท้องทันทีหลังผ่าตัด สามารถช่วยให้ผู้ป่วยมีชีวิตที่ยาวนานขึ้นได้
