Efficacy of muscle energy technique of pectoral muscles on forward shoulder posture, chest expansion, respiratory muscle strength, and lung capacity in sedentary students: A preliminary study
Main Article Content
Abstract
Sedentary behaviors and excessive screen use in studying age result in muscle imbalance and forward shoulder posture (FSP), which can be risk of musculoskeletal injury and respiratory restriction. Currently, there are several interventions for preventing and treating the muscle imbalance in individuals with forward shoulder posture. Manual therapy in muscle stretching, Muscle energy technique (MET) is another intervention that improves musculoskeletal function and relieve pain via autogenic inhibition. Therefore, MET might alleviate FSP and improve respiratory function. The aim of this preliminary study was to determine the stretching of the pectoral muscles by MET for restoring chest expansion, respiratory muscle strength, and pulmonary function in students prone to sedentary behaviors with FSP. Fifteen 18-23 years old males were randomly divided into control group (n = 7) and MET group (n = 8). In the MET group, pectoral muscles were stretched by MET, 5 days a week for 2 weeks and measured at baseline and after intervention by vernier height gauge, tape measure, hand held dynamometer, micro medical respiratory pressure meter, and spirometer, respectively. The results found that 2-week MET intervention decreased FSP (p < 0.05), increased chest expansion in the middle part (p = 0.001) and maximum inspiratory and expiration pressure (p < 0.05) as compared to the baseline. Therefore, these findings suggested that MET of pectoral muscle stretching could be an alternative intervention for alleviating FSP and improving respiratory muscle function.
