Trend in the Prevalence of Metabolic Syndrome among Healthcare Workers in Nopparat Rajchathani Hospital

Abstract

Objective: This study aimed to assess trend in the prevalence of metabolic syndrome and effects of lifestyle modifcation program on metabolic syndrome and its components among healthcare workers in Nopparat Rajchathani Hospital. Methods: This cross-sectional study included 44 healthcare workers diagnosed with metabolic syndrome in 2009, who attended a lifestyle modifcation program and 307 healthcare workers without metabolic syndrome, who did not attend a metabolic program. National Cholesterol Education Program criteria were used for the defnition of metabolic syndrome. Results: Overall prevalence of Metabolic syndrome slightly declined from 12.5% in 2009 to 12.3% in 2012. Individuals having Metabolic syndrome in 2009 decreased from 44 to 26 in 2012 (decreased by 40.9%). In addition, triglyceride level and HDL-Cholesterol level in this metabolic syndrome group signifcantly improved. On the other hand, there were 17 new cases in 2012 among 307 nonmetabolic syndrome individuals in 2009 (increased by 5.5%). Furthermore, metabolic components including systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, waist circumference and fasting blood glucose in this group signifcantly increased. Conclusion: The prevalence of Metabolic syndromes had a minor changes and a lifestyle modification program was effective to resolve metabolic syndrome and improve metabolic components among healthcare workers in Nopparat Rajchathani hospital.
