Lifestyle of Healthy Elders Aged 80 Years and Over

This qualitative research aimed to explore the lifestyles of healthy older adults aged 80 years and above. A total of 13 participants were purposively selected. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observations, and field notes. Data were analyzed using Colaizzi’s (1978) method. The findings revealed five main themes describing the lifestyles of healthy older adults aged 80 years and over: 1) Daily living, consisting of three subthemes: 1.1) working in rice farming as the primary occupation, 1.2) engaging in daily leisure activities, and 1.3) using religion as a source of spiritual support; 2) Health care behaviors, consisting of three subthemes: 2.1) preparing meals independently, 2.2) using dietary supplements based on personal beliefs, and 2.3) performing light exercise regularly; 3) Health problem management, consisting of three subthemes: 3.1) consulting physicians for medical treatment, 3.2) self-care despite physical limitations, and 3.3) using beliefs to alleviate health symptoms; 4) Social and family interactions, consisting of two subthemes: 4.1) receiving care and attention from family members, and 4.2) regularly participating in social activities; 5) Adaptation to aging, consisting of three subthemes: 5.1) quitting smoking and alcohol consumption, 5.2) saving money for emergencies, and 5.3) letting go and achieving peace of mind.
The results of this study can serve as a practical guideline for nurses and healthcare professionals to plan care, promote health, and appropriately enhance the quality of life among older adults.
