แรงงานทางอารมณ์กับภาวะหมดไฟในอาชีพพยาบาล

วิชาชีพพยาบาลเป็นอาชีพที่ต้องปฏิบัติงานให้เหมาะสมกับมาตรฐานของวิชาชีพและความหวังของของสังคม นอกจากจะต้องใช้แรงกายในการปฏิบัติงานทั้งในเวลาและนอกเวลาราชการแล้ว พยาบาลยังต้องใช้แรงงานทางอารมณ์เพื่อมีปฏิสัมพันธ์กับผู้มารับบริการ โดยแรงงานทางอารมณ์หรือการควบคุมคามรู้สึกขณะทำงานแบ่งออกเป็นสองชนิดคือ การแสร้งแสดงความรู้สึกและการปรับความรู้สึกภายในจิตใจ ถึงแม้ว่ากลยุทธ์ทั้งสองชนิดจะแสดงผลลัพธ์ที่เหมือนกัน แต่การใช้ทรัพยากรทางอารมณ์นั้นต่างกัน การแสร้งแสดงความรู้สึกจะบริโภคทรัพยากรทางอารมณ์มากกว่าการปรับความรู้สึกภายในจิตใจตามทฤษฎีภาวะพร่องในการควบคุมตน ดังนั้นเมื่อแรงงานทางอารมณ์อยู่ในระดับที่เหมาะสมก็จะก่อให้เกิดประโยชน์ต่อตัวพยาบาล ผู้มารับบริการและโรงพยาบาล แต่ถ้าแรงงานทางอารมณ์อยู่ในระดับที่มากเกินไปก็อาจจะก่อให้เกิดภาวะหมดไฟขึ้นมาได้
