Outcomes of Primiparous Pregnancy between Teenage and Adult Mothers

Pregnancy in teenagers may induce maternal and neonatal complications during pregnancy and labor. This retrospective analytic research aimed to compare maternal and neonatal outcomes from inpatient medical records and birth registration records, between 577 primiparous teenage mothers (age less than 20 years) and 813 primiparous adult mothers (age 20-34 years) who were admitted and delivered at Uthong Hospital, Suphanburi during fiscal year 2014-2016. Patient characteristics, pregnancy data, labor records, obstetric complications and neonatal outcomes were collected. Data were presented as frequency, percentage, mean and standard deviation and were analyzed by chi-square test, Fisher’s exact test and independent t-test with statistic significant level at 0.05. The study found that teenage mothers had significantly higher rates of inadequate antenatal care, severe preeclampsia, thick meconium stained amniotic fluid and fetal distress. Moreover, teenage mothers also had significantly higher rates of anemia, thick meconium stained amniotic fluid, severe preeclampsia, prolonged 2nd stage of labor and preterm delivery. Teenage mothers’ newborns had significantly higher rates of neonatal jaundice, meconium aspiration syndrome, preterm and endotracheal intubation. In conclusion, primiparous teenage mothers have more chance to get maternal and neonatal complications. So, they should receive proper antenatal care and effective contraception.
