Prevalence and Risk Factors of Diabetic Retinopathy Among Type 2 Diabetic Patients in Phra Samut Chedi Sawatyanon Hospital

Objective:To evaluate the prevalence and risk factors of diabetic retinopathy (DR) among type 2 diabetic mellitus (T2DM) patients in Phra Samut Chedi Sawatyanon Hospital. Material and Methods:This cross-sectional study was performed on 922 T2DM patients who were received DR screening by Raj Pracha Samasai ophthalmic mobile unit at Phra Samut Chedi Sawatyanon Hospital, Samut Prakarn province during April to May 2015. All patients were underwent fundus examination by non-mydriatic fundus camera.
Results:The prevalence of DR was 7.4% (68 patients). The patients who were categorized into non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy 7.20% and proliferative diabetic retinopathy 0.20%. The risk factors of DR were the duration of diabetes mellitus diagnosis more than 5 years (OR 1.76, 95%CI 1.02-3.04, p<0.05) visual acuity between 20/60 to 20/200 (OR 1.55, 95%CI 1.02-2.37, p<0.05) visual acuity between 20/200 to Hand Motion (OR 2.51, 95%CI 1.43-4.38, p<0.01) and single insulin treatment (OR 3.00, 95%CI 1.42-6.33, p<0.01). Conclusions: The screening of DR should be regularly performed, especially in the patients who have long duration of DM, decrease visual acuity and received single insulin treatment.
