Abstract

This quasi-experimental research aimed to compare the effects of a nurse support program on blood loss volume with a risk of postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) and service satisfaction of mothers. The samples consisted of 60 postpartum mothers who had a vaginal birth, were at risk for postpartum hemorrhage, and were admitted to the postpartum ward in Hatyai hospital. The samples who met the research inclusion criteria were recruited for the study from August to November 2023. They were assigned into a control group (30 subjects) and an intervention group (30 subjects). To prevent data contamination, firstly, data were gathered in the control group who received usual nursing care. Then the nurse support program was provided in the intervention group. The research instruments consisted of 3 parts: 1) the intervention instruments consisted of 1.1) the nurse support program and 1.2) the learning model of uterine contraction. 2) the experimental-control instrument was a self-recording form for uterine massage, and 3) the data collection instruments comprised 5 forms: 3.1) the personal data 3.2) the risk assessment for PPH 3.3) the recording of blood loss volume at 2-8 hours postpartum 3.4) the recording of blood loss volume at 8-24 hours postpartum, and 3.5) the service satisfaction assessment form, examined for content validity by 3 experts, yielding a content validity of .89. The data were analyzed using frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, Chi-square, and Mann-Whitney U test.

The results showed that the mothers at risk for PPH who received the nurse support program had blood loss volume at 2–8 and after 8–24 hours postpartum significantly lower than the control group (Z = -4.681, p < .001) and (Z = -2.818, p < .001), respectively. The service satisfaction of the mothers at risk for PPH who received the nurse support program was at its highest level. The results show the nurse support program can prevent PPH in mothers at risk for PPH.

Therefore, the program should be provided for postpartum mothers.
