Abstract

Patient safety has been defined as a service outcome and a significant indicator of hospital
accreditation (HA). The development of patient safety culture aims to increase concerns of patient safety among health care providers.

This descriptive research aimed to study nurses' perception of patient safety culture and the development of this culture. The population of this study included 90 nurses who participated in the conference on patient safety culture. A questionnaire of patient safety culture and the development of the culture was used for data collection. Both content validity index were 0.95 and 0.98 and the reliability were 0.85 and 0.92. Descriptive statistics was used for data analysis.

Results of this study showed that 22.20 % of the population included registered nurses aged between 31-35 years old and 65.60 % of these worked in community hospitals. 25.90 % of the population had more than 21 year working experiences as a registered nurse. There was 35.60 % who had been working in the current hospital between 6-10 years, with a working time of 40-59 hours per week (73.30 %). There were 96.70 % of the population took action in direct care and 76.70% worked at the hospitals certified as accredited hospitals. Although overall scores of nurses' perception on patient safety culture were in a high level (= 3.55,=0.33), the incidence of mistaken practices and death among patients were always reported (81.10 %). 61.10 % of the population perceived that a level of patient safety was in an acceptable level. In addition, the overall scores of nurses' perception on the development of patient safety culture was also in a high level ( = 3.59,=0.46).

Findings from this study suggested that the hospital and nurse administrators should develop and enhance patient safety culture both at a unit level and an organizational level in order to increase quality of the hospital.
