Development of a 3-in-1 Nursing Skills Training Kit to Enhance Learning Outcomes and Satisfaction among First-Year Nursing Students at Boromrajonnani College of Nursing Nakhon Si Thammarat

This research and development study aimed to 1) examine the current state of innovation in skills training for venipuncture, intravenous fluid, and intravenous medication administration, 2) develop a 3-in-1 nursing skills training kit, and 3) evaluate the effectiveness and satisfaction on quality of new training kit. The research was conducted in three phases: 1) situation analysis (reviewing relevant literature to explore the current state of skills training innovation), 2) development (integrated knowledge from the literature review and the findings of the first phase to create and trial the training kit), and 3) evaluation (assessment of effectiveness and satisfaction) among 45 first-year nursing students. The research instruments were knowledge tests, practical skills assessment forms, and a satisfaction evaluation form. The research instruments’ content validity were examined using CVI, yielding values of 0.90, 1, and 1, respectively. The knowledge test had item difficulty ranging from .33 to .80 and a discrimination index between .29 and .43. Reliability score of the practical skills evaluation form (inter-observer reliability) was .80.Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and paired t-tests. The results were as follows.
1. Existing innovations for training in blood sampling, intravenous fluid, and medication administration had limitations, including unrealistically large blood vessels, overly thick synthetic skin, and the absence of realistic blood pressure feedback. Recommendations included improving flexibility and vessel size to resemble real anatomy, adding an alert system for errors, and providing a user manual.
2. The developed kit included instructional videos, a realistic arm model with a base, a stand for fluid bags, artificial blood containers, and an equipment box for skills practice.
3.In terms of the effectiveness and satisfaction evaluation, a statistically significant improvement in knowledge and practical skills was observed before and after training (t = -16.397, t = -6.700,
p-value < .001). The satisfaction with quality of new training kit was rated at a very high level.
Therefore, the 3-in-1 nursing skills training kit is recommended for teaching and learning to enhance students' knowledge and skills in venipuncture, intravenous fluid administration, and intravenous medication administration.
