Personal, Family, and Peer Factors Influencing Smoking Behavior among Lower Secondary School Students in Chonburi Province, Thailand

Abstract

Background: Tobacco use among adolescents is an important public health problem, particularly electronic cigarette use, which is increasing. Individual, family, and peer factors may influence smoking behavior. However, evidence among lower secondary school students in Thailand remains limited.


Objectives: To examine smoking behavior and analyze the influence of individual, family, and peer factors on smoking behavior among lower secondary school students in Chonburi Province.


Methods: This analytical cross-sectional study included 790 lower secondary school students selected through multistage random sampling. Data were collected using an online questionnaire and analyzed using descriptive statistics, chi-square tests, and multiple logistic regression. The statistical significance level was set at .05.


Results: A total of 10.13% of the students were current tobacco users, with most using electronic cigarettes. The analysis showed that being male (adjusted OR=8.74, 95% CI: 4.45–17.19), having close friends who smoked (adjusted OR=2.11, 95% CI: 1.32–3.37), being invited to smoke (adjusted OR=1.96, 95% CI: 1.17–3.28), and a one-point increase in the attitude toward tobacco use score (adjusted OR=1.07, 95% CI: 1.05–1.10) significantly influenced smoking behavior. In contrast, family factors did not show a statistically significant influence.


Conclusion: Smoking behavior among lower secondary school students was associated with multiple levels of factors, particularly sex, attitudes toward tobacco use, and peer influence. Tobacco use prevention among adolescents should focus on addressing peer influence, strengthening refusal skills, modifying attitudes toward tobacco use, and promoting non-smoking norms within the school health system.
