Effectiveness of program enhancing health literacy on health behaviors 3E 2S among elderly

Abstract
Background: Health literacy is a significant factor in enhancing health behaviors, especially 3E2S of the elderly.
Objectives: To determine the effectiveness of the health literacy enhancing program on health literacy and 3E2S health behavior of the Thai elderly.
Methods: The research design was a quasi-experiment with a two group pretest-posttest design. The sample consisted of 128 Thai people aged more than 60 years. Sixty-four people were assigned to the experimental group, who received the health literacy enhancing program, and the other sixty-four to the control group who received the usual program. The research Instruments were a health literacy enhancing program consisting of activities to enhance communication, media literacy, and self-management skills. This program was conducted for 12 weeks. Data were collected using self-administered questionnaires composed of personal information form, the 3E2S Health Literacy scale (3E2S-HLS), and health behaviors. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The dependent t-test was used to analyze the difference in mean scores.
Results: The study revealed that the mean scores of Health literacy and 3E2S health behaviors were statistically significantly increased (p<.01). The mean scores of health literacy and 3E2S health behaviors of the experimental group were statistically significantly higher than those of the control group (p<.01).
Conclusions: The health literacy enhancing program effectively improved health literacy and health behaviors 3E2S of the elderly.
