Guidelines for the development of holistic wellness by the innovation elderly school, Phuho Subdistrict, Phuluang District, Loei Province

Abstract
Background: Thailand is in a phase of transition to a complete ageing society. The Innovation Elderly School plays a significant role in caring for the elderly in the community.
Objective: The objectives of this study were to investigate the holistic wellness situation of the elderly and to develop guidelines for the development of holistic wellness through the innovative elderly school.
Methods: The study was conducted based on 4 phases, 1) The study phases of situation and problem holistic wellness health care for the elderly by the innovative elderly school, 2) phase of analyzing community potential, 3) phase of research and development, and 4) phase of monitoring and evaluation.
Results: The results of analyses revealed that the overall health status of the elderly population in Phuho sub-district is 17.23% of the total population. The guidelines for the development of holistic wellness through the innovative elderly school, approach includes: 1) Physical well-being promotes self-care of the elderly by providing knowledge about health care and prevention of illnesses, both infectious and non-infectious diseases; 2) Mental well-being includes activities that relax the minds of the elderly and teaching them about ways to reduce stress or depression; 3) Social well-being focus on encouraging the elderly to interact with others using group activities and involving family members; 4) Intellectual wellbeing encourages the elderly to feel sacrificed, sympathize with others and participate in voluntary activities in the community.
Conclusions: Holistic wellness health care for the elderly requires the participation of the community, agencies involved and engaging elderly families in caring for the elderly. This will provide the elderly with a comprehensive holistic well-being.
