Development of program to enhance communication skills using ISBAR by reflection for nursing students in adult and elderly nursing practicum
Main Article Content
Abstract
Background: Nursing students' communication skills affect their ability to convey clinical information about patients. The use of ISBAR as a tool can contribute to the development of communication skills of nursing students.
Objectives: To study the situation, develop and evaluate a program to enhance communication skills using ISBAR through reflection for nursing students in adult and elderly nursing practicum.
Methodology: The research and development study consists of 3 phases: 1) Situation analysis, 2) Development and implementation of the program to enhance communication skills with ISBAR through reflection. 3) Evaluation of the program's impacts. The samples were nursing students divided into an experimental group of 32, a control group of 32, 15 nurse preceptors, and 64 patients. Data collection was done through assessments of knowledge and handover skills, program satisfaction, and communication skills of the nursing students. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics and t-tests.
Results: 1) Nursing students took a long time to perform handovers, needed a structured narrative, often omitted critical information, needed to follow a clear format, and needed tools for guidance. 2) A program to enhance communication skills using ISBAR through reflection can develop communication skills for nursing students 3) The mean score of knowledge and handover skills of nursing students participating in the program was higher than before participating in the program and significantly higher than the control group. The patients showed significantly higher satisfaction with the communication skills of the nursing students who participated in the program than the control group, with statistical significance at the .001 level. Additionally, nursing students and nurse preceptors expressed a high level of satisfaction with the program's implementation.
Conclusions: The program to enhance communication skills using ISBAR through reflection can help nursing students communicate and transfer patient information effectively.
