Development of an adaptation promoting model for the care givers of patients with non-communicable disease, in Nakhon Lampang Municipality Area
Main Article Content
Abstract
Background: Caregivers of patients with non-communicable diseases must adapt to the demands of patient care, which can lead to adverse physical, mental, and social consequence if adaptation is inappropriate. The inability to adapt can lead to challenges in daily life, fatigue, and ultimately, the inability to provide patient care.
Objective: 1) To develop an adaptation promoting model for the caregivers of patients with non-communicable diseases, and 2) To examine the effectiveness of the model in promoting the adaptation of the caregivers.
Methods: This research and development study was divided into two phases: Phase 1 involved developing a model to promote the adaptation of caregivers with two sample groups: 1) 138 caregivers of patients with non-communicable diseases, and 2) 12 health professionals specializing in the care of patients with non-communicable diseases. The research tools included an adaptation assessment form, a focus group discussion record form, and a feasibility assessment form for the model. Phase 2 examined the effects of the model on the adaptation of caregivers with a sample of 138 caregivers of patients with non-communicable diseases. The research tools for this phase included the caregiver adaptation promoting model and the adaptation assessment form. Data were analyzed using frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, content analysis, and t-test.
Results: After implementing the caregiver adaptation promoting model, the adaptation level of the experimental group was significantly higher than that of the control group (p < .001). Additionally, the adaptation level of the experimental group post-implementation was significantly higher than prior to implementing the model (p<.001).
Conclusions: The caregiver adaptation promoting model can serve as a guideline to bolster the physical well-being of caregivers, helping to prevent health-compromising behaviors and the onset of illness.
