Effects of a health literacy development program to prevent nursing students from becoming new smokers

Abstract

Background: Currently, the problem of smoking has become widespread among the youth. The main reason for this is the desire to experiment. imitate a friend Without protection, new smokers will increase among the youth.


Objective: To investigate the effects of a health literacy development program to prevent nursing students becoming new smokers.


Methods: A quasi-experimental research with two groups pre- and post-tests was conducted. The sample consisted of 60 nursing students purposively selected from Tobacco-free environment nurse student club. The students were equally assigned to an experimental group and comparison group, 30 each. Research tools included a health literacy development program to prevention nursing students from becoming new smokers. The program duration was 4 weeks with 5 activities. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and t-test.


Results: After participating in the program, the mean score of health literacy of the nursing students in relation to preventing new smokers was significantly higher than before the experiment at the .05 level and significantly higher than the comparison group at the .05 level.


Conclusions: The health literacy development program for preventing new smokers can equip students with knowledge. It gave skills to prevent new smokers and can transfer them to other students in the college as well as apply to people in the community
