Oral Health Literacy in Adolescents and Related Factors: A Systematic Review

Oral health literacy is a concept utilized in promoting oral health, and it is essential to understand the relationships between related factors. The objective of this research article was to study oral health literacy and its associated factors in students and adolescents. This was conducted through a systematic literature review, with research studies sourced from PubMed, Semantic Scholar, Google Scholar, the Thai Digital Collection, and Thai Journal Online between 2020 and 2024. Twelve articles met the inclusion criteria, and their quality was assessed using the research quality assessment tool by Heller et al. (2007).
The results revealed that 11 selected studies indicated that oral health literacy among students and adolescents was mostly at a moderate level. Factors found to be consistently related to oral health literacy in two or more studies included gender, education level, ethnicity, parental status, parental age, family size, parental education, family cohesion, family adaptation, and social class. Additionally, four studies confirmed that oral health literacy is associated with oral health care behaviors. Therefore, developing oral health literacy in students and adolescents should emphasize personal and family factors.
