Family Factors and Behaviors Associated with Overweight and Obesity in Young Adolescents Living in Pong Subdistrict Municipality, Pong District, Phayao Province, Thailand

The research objective to study family factors and daily behavior that are associated with overweight and obesity. Mixed methods between a cross-sectional study and qualitative data collection using in-depth interviews were carried out. The families were used as the study unit and family members as the sample for data analysis. Weight and height measuring device, structured and semi-structured questionnaires were used research tools. The study found that 136 (38.6%) children were overweight and obese. Factors that are risk factors for overweight and obesity namely currently studying, living in nuclear family, families with insufficient monthly income, food eating between meals, and while watching TV, eating snacks and drinks, dairy products and sugar, soft drinks, sedentary behavior, and lack of exercise. The study findings help to understand risk factors for overweight and obesity, and consideration in determining measures to adjust or change the lifestyle of adolescents at risk of disease.
