Development of a hearing screening model in at-risk newborns Naradhiwasrajanagarindra Hospital

Abstract

The aims of the research are to study the situation of hearing screening problems, develop and assess the effectiveness of a hearing screening model in at-risk newborns of Naradhiwasrajanagarindra Hospital. The operation consists of 3 steps: 1.) Study the situation of hearing screening problems by purposive collecting data in registered nurses of neonatal intensive care units and neonatal care unit nurses via using content analysis. 2.) Develop a model by drafting a pattern of screening for at-risk newborns through expert review. 3.) Study the effectiveness of the model, a quasi-experimental research was using by measuring pre and post of the experiment. The sample groups were 26 neonatal intensive care unit registered nurses and neonatal care unit registered nurses. The research instruments were including a hearing screening model in at-risk newborns, Specialized Neonatal Hearing Disorders Screening Form and an assessment form of knowledge of newborn screening for high-risk groups. Statistics analytics were using frequency, percentage and statistics Wilcoxon sign ranks test.

           The result reveal that 1.) Problems of hearing screening in high-risk newborns in Naradhiwasrajanagarindra Hospital were, including long queues, insufficient of tools and lack of examination personnels. The optimizing of hearing screening services included; increasing the number of appointments, fill up screening personals, adjusting the queues system, handing out brochures and personnel training. 2.) Components of the hearing screening model in high-risk newborns include: personnel, newborns screening for high-risk, screening equipment, screening environment and the appointment process. 3.) The applicated of the hearing screening model among high-risk newborns in Naradhiwasrajanagarindra Hospital found that hearing screening rate was higher and screening's knowledge among professional nurses increased significantly (p<0.001).
