Prevalence and Risk Factors Related to Traumatic Dental Injuries Among High School Students in Suphanburi Sports School

Abstract

When participating in sports, there is always the potential for harm especially around the teeth and jawbone. This research is a descriptive study of the prevalence and factors related to dental and jawbone injuries in high school students at Suphanburi Sports School, who are currently enrolled for the academic year 2021. Data was collected using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, minimum value, maximum value, and prevalence of tooth and jawbone injuries from collision sports.

The findings demonstrate the prevalence of tooth and jawbone injuries among Suphanburi Sports School students, as well as the factors that contribute to these injuries. They frequently suffered injuries to their teeth and jawbones because there were more male participants than females, and males often played collision sports, with an average age of 15 years. The upper front teeth were the most seriously injured. The nature of the injury was collision, which caused bleeding around the gums. Most students did not use mouth and head protective equipment because they believe it their equipment were uncomfortable for playing sports and some sport not require them. Moreover, the coach did not require the students to wear protective equipment throughout training and competition, which increased the risk of tooth and jawbone injuries.
