Abstract

This quasi-experimental research aimed to compare the perceived counseling roles of head nurses between those who received a counseling skills enhancement program and a control group. The sample consisted of 60 head nurses, divided into an experimental group (n = 30) and a control group (n = 30). The research instruments included: 1) the counseling skills enhancement program, and 2) a questionnaire on the perception of counseling roles, with a content validity index (CVI) of 0.93 and a Cronbach’s alpha reliability coefficient of 0.92. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, independent t-test, and dependent t-test.The results showed that after the intervention, the experimental group reported a high overall mean score of perceived counseling roles (x̅ = 4.57, S.D. = 0.24). Among the sub-dimensions, the highest mean score was in the role of health service provider (x̅ = 4.61, S.D. = 0.30), followed by the role of management (x̄ = 4.58, S.D. = 0.17). The experimental group’s perception of counseling roles after the intervention was significantly higher than before the intervention (p < 0.05) and significantly higher than that of the control group (p < 0.05).This study indicates that the counseling skills enhancement program is effective in improving head nurses’ perception of their counseling roles. Nursing administrators are encouraged to apply human resource development concepts to continuously support counseling practices, particularly for novice nurses and those rotating between units, in order to enhance work efficiency and the quality of patient care.
