Abstract

This quasi-experimental single-group pre- and post-test study evaluated the impact of a Thalassemia health education program on adolescents by comparing their knowledge, attitude, and practice scores before and after the intervention and assessed participants' satisfaction and self-evaluation with the program. Subjects were 320 grade 9 students at a secondary school in Muang district, Phitsanulok province. The subjects participated through online media of thalassemia health education program with cartoon animation. The research instrument was approved by three experts, yielding an Index of Content Validity (IOC) between 6.67 and 1.00 and a Cronbach's alpha reliability coefficient of 0.81. The questionnaire assessed knowledge, attitudes, and practices related to thalassemia counseling and screening. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics including frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, and inferential statistics using the t-test.

The results showed that mean score of the knowledge, attitude and practice to provide advice on thalassemia significantly increased after receiving health education program at p-value < 0.001, (t = 6.99, t= 3.52 and t = 4.26). The result of program evaluation and self- evaluation also found that after training, the subjects were satisfied in most areas including online cartoon-based training, media training, method to transfer knowledge, technique used to convey knowledge, difficulty to convey knowledge, and the ability to convey. The results of this study indicated that nurses and health care providers should apply the online cartoon-based thalassemia health education program as a valuable complementary approach for controlling and screening thalassemia among the risk persons and pregnancy women.
