Abstract

            This study titled Community Participation in the Development of the Temple: The Control of Cigarettes and Alcoholic Beverage Consumption in Ubon Ratchathani is a qualitative research. Its objective is to study the approach of temple development and its community participation to control the cigarettes and alcoholic beverage consumption in Ubon Ratchathani. The sample groups comprise ten different informants with various social status and roles in the community. The Buddhist monks come from different communities; ten are from rural and semi-rural areas. The method in this research was  structured Interview .

         The findings of this research are explained in these four following aspects  (1) The development of the Buddhist monks’ personal potentials in controlling the consumption of cigarettes and alcoholic beverage of the people in the community (2) The development of the monastery area or ‘Wat’ and its neighbourhood to be in accordance with the control of cigarettes and alcoholic beverage consumption of the people in the community (3) The development of religious activities to be in accordance with the control of the cigarettes and alcoholic beverage consumption of the people in the community (4) The development of the existing and the new stakeholders and networks that include bureaucrats, schools, public health service channels, community leaders and the people in the community so that they take part in the control of the cigarettes and alcoholic beverage consumption.
