Abstract

This research and development aimed to develop a model for promoting health literacy in environmental health management among older adults in Bangkok. The research was conducted in three phases. 1) involved studying the current situation among 360 older adults 2) focused on developing the model and testing it with 30 participants in the experimental group and 30 in the control group, and 3) was dedicated to evaluating the model at three time points: before the intervention, after 6 and 8-week follow-up. Data were collected from 13 January 2025 to 9 March 2025 using a health literacy in environmental health management and health-related environmental management behaviors questionnaire, both validated for IOC 0.67 to 1.00, and reliability 0.96 for and 0.89 scores respectively. Data were analyzed using repeated measures ANOVA. Qualitative data were analyzed using content analysis. Research results revealed the following: 1) the overall level of health literacy in environmental health management among older persons in Bangkok was high (M = 96.16, SD = 17.88). As for the qualitative data, it was found that the knowledge level of the elderly is still insufficient. 2) The developed model consisted of three key activities: a) health literacy enhancement , b) home management, and c) digital aging and 3) After applying the model, the experimental group demonstrated significantly higher scores in access to information, understanding, information verification, decision-making, and health-related environmental management behaviors compared to before the intervention and to the control group, with statistical significance at the 0.05 level. Therefore, this model is recommended for adoption by relevant agencies to promote health literacy in environmental health management among older persons, in order to improve health-supportive behaviors.
