The Effects of Developing Maternal Role Program for Post-Partum Teenage Mothers in Pathum Thani Province
Abstract
The purpose of this quasi- experimental descriptive research was to study the effects of developing maternal role program for post-partum teenage mothers in Pathum Thani province. The pre test-post test two groups design was utilized. The researcher applied Maternal Role Attainment Theory (Mercer, 1991) as a conceptual framework. The samples were consisted of 60 pregnant teenagers who had at least 36 weeks gestation and utilized maternal health care service in five community hospitals in Pathum Thani province. Those purposive samples were divided into 30 cases for each experimental group and control group. The maternal role program for post-partum teenage mothers included health education, skill training, and continuing care. Its content consisted of maternal role imagination, maternal-infant attachment skill, maternal role attainment promotion, and encouragement. The research instrument were personal interview and successfulness of maternal role attainment achievement questionnaires (MRAS-Form B) (Phumonsakul, et al., 2004). Its reliability was demonstrated at 0.87. Demographic data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics; whereas, compared mean difference of the maternal role attainment score using t - test.
The study found that overall, after the experimental group who received this program, there were statistically significant higher scores of maternal role attainment. For each of component, there was statistically significant greater score of the maternal-infant attachment, competence and confidence, and satisfaction of maternal role than before receiving program as well as in the control group.
The researcher suggests that nurse practitioners and other health professionals should apply this program for maternal role preparation among post- partum teenage mothers in another community hospitals for the benefits of maternal - child attachment promotion and child development
