Abstract

Objectives: To compare changes in nutritional status (body mass index and waist circumference) and knee pain (pain score) before and after receiving the weight control programs using group and community support of control and experimental groups. Research design: A quasi-experimental research
Methods: The participants were the overweight older adults with knee pain in two senior clubs in Bangkok. These participants were divided into two groups: 30 experimental and 30 control groups. The experimental groups received the weight control programs using group and community for 8 weeks in terms of raise awareness, goal setting, and driving change and innovation by using group activities to control weight, exercise, knee exercise, and community empowerment for sustainable change. Meanwhile, the control group received brochures providing information on food exchange, healthy diets, and knee management methods developed by the researcher. Data were collected by nutritional assessment and knee pain before and after taking part in the program. Also, data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics, t-test, Chi-square test and Mann-Whitney U test


Results: The experimental group had a decrease in body mass index (p <.001), waist circumference (p <.001) and pain score (p <.001) more than the control group with statistical significance. Conclusion: The results of the study suggest that nurses and community health teams work in the community by promoting the application of the program in order to modify the health behavior of overweight older adults with knee pain in the community.
