บทคัดย่อ

The purpose of this research was to evaluate mental health of the elderly with chronic illness
in community. Three hundred and sixty-one samples were simple random sampling from 5,756
older people in Saensuk municipality, Chon Buri, Thailand. The mental health evaluation tools
were Suanprung Stress Test-20 and Thai Geriatric Depression Scale: TGDS. Statistics employed
were frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, t-test, One way ANOVA and Pearson
product moment correlation coefficient.
We found that;
1. The most common health problems of the elderly was arthritis and knee pain
(94.96%). Hypertension (75.66%) was the second most common health problem.
2. Most of the elderly (56.75%) had moderate stress level, following by high stress levels
(21.62%), mild stress (6.22 %) and severe stress level (5.41%).
3. There was no depression up to 70.27% among the elderly with chronic illness.
While depression consisted of 29.73% which was mild (18.92%), moderate (8.11%) and severe
depression (2.7%).
4. Education and occupation of elderly were associated with their stress statistical
significance at the level of 0.05 and of 0.01 respectively.
5. The personal characteristics of the elderly with chronic illness were not associated
with depression.
6. The stress was related to depression in elderly with chronic illness statistical
significance at the 0.05 level.
There are mental health problems, stress and depression among the elderly with
chronic illness who are living in an urban community, Saensuk municipality, Chon Buri Province,
Thailand. Elderly care to improve quality of life is needed.
