Health Literacy and Exclusive Breastfeeding Self-management of First-time Mothers

This descriptive correlational research aimed to explore the relationship between health literacy and exclusive breastfeeding self-management of first-time mothers. The samples were 85 first-time mothers who attended the well baby clinic at Chiang Mai Health Promotion Center Region 1 Hospital. The research instruments were composed of a demographic data questionnaire, a health literacy questionnaire with reliability of .82, and an exclusive breastfeeding self-management questionnaire with reliability of .85. Data were collected from May to September, 2020. Statistics used for data analysis included frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, and Pearson’s product moment correlation.
The research results revealed that first-time mothers had the total mean scores of health literacy and exclusive breastfeeding self-management at a high level (M = 49.24, SD = 6.02 and M = 63.59, SD = 8.39, respectively). Health literacy was positively statistically significantly related to exclusive breastfeeding self-management of first-time mothers (r = .281, p < .01).
This research suggests that nursing personnel should promote the health literacy of first-time mothers in order to raise their exclusive breastfeeding self-management.
