Effectiveness of a health literacy program on stroke preventive behaviors among working age with hypertension in Bangkok metropolitan communities
Abstract
This experimental study aimed to study the effect of a health literacy enhancement program on stroke prevention behaviors among working-age hypertensive patients in Bangkok metropolitan communities. The program was developed based on the health literacy framework of Don Nutbeam. The study samples consisted of 70 patients aged 20-59 years old who were diagnosed with hypertension for at least 3 months and were randomly assigned into an experimental group and a control group with 35 each. The experimental group received an 8-week health literacy program while the control group received routine care. Data was collected from February to April 2024 using questionnaires regarding general information and stroke prevention behaviors. The difference in mean scores of stroke prevention behaviors between the experimental and control groups was analyzed using the Independent t-test. The difference in mean scores of stroke prevention behaviors before and after receiving the program in the experimental and control groups was analyzed using the Paired t-test.The study found that the experimental group had significantly higher stroke prevention behaviors scores than the control group (p<.05). The stroke prevention behavior scores of working-age hypertensive patients in the experimental group before and after receiving the program were significantly different (p<.05).
The results of this study revealed that the health literacy enhancement program could be applied to change the behavior of working-age hypertensive patients who are at risk of cerebrovascular disease and presented to administrators to plan and implement policies for the care of hypertensive patients to prevent stroke more effectively.
