Abstract

Health problems related to ergonomic hazards are highly prevalent among hospital personnel in Chaophya Abhaibhubejhr Hospital Prachinburi Province. The purpose of this study was therefore to develop nursing service model to solve health problems caused by ergonomic hazards in hospital personnel and test for its effectiveness. The study was divided into 3 phases including ; Phase 1 situational analysis and explore how to address health problems related to ergonomic hazards ; Phase 2 development of nursing service to solve health problems caused by ergonomic hazards ; and Phase 3 Implementation of the developed model and test for its outcomes on knowledge, behaviors related to musculoskeletal disorders prevention, physical fitness, and musculoskeletal health problems. Satisfaction of the model and opinion related to effectiveness of the model were also explored.

Situational analysis found that although health problems related to ergonomic hazards tend to be increased and vary by work unit, currently there is no effective model to address the problems. Researchers therefore develop nursing service model based on ergonomic principle and self-care theory to solve health problems caused by ergonomic hazards in hospital personnel.  The model consisted of ergonomic risk assessment, development of work instruction, nursing innovation related to health education channel and media, and coaching and monitoring of the problem. After the implementation with 106 hospital personnel with nursing service model to solve health problems caused by ergonomic hazards in hospital personnel, it was found that mean score of knowledge and behaviors related to musculoskeletal disorders prevention, and physical fitness were significantly higher than that before the implementation, while musculoskeletal health problems significantly lower (p < 0. 001). Participants also satisfied with the model and perceived effectiveness of the model at very high level. Findings suggest that the model developed in this study could be applied to other work-related health problem of hospital personnel.
