EFFECT OF THE PROGRAM APPLYING OREM’S NURSING THEORY TO PREVENT PERIPHERAL ARTERIAL DISEASE IN THE ELDERLY PATIENTS WITH DIABETES MELLITUS AND HYPERTENSION

This quasi-experimental research with 2 group pre-post test design aimed to examine effect of the program applying Orem’s nursing theory to prevent perpheral arteral disease in elderly patients with diabetes melltitus and hypertension, Elderly registered at a community in Bang Sue ,Bangkok Metropolitan were assigned into an experimental group (n=28), and comparison group (n=28). The experimental group received a 8-week Orem’s nursing theory applying program, whereas a comarison group received a usual care.Data were collected by the researchre using a questionnaire record before and after the intervention. Data were anlyzed using percentage, mean, standard diviation, analytical statistics such as Chi-square test, Independent t-test, and Paired t-test.
After intervention, the experimental group had significantly higherscores on
Knowledge and behaviours in preventing peripheral arterial disease than before and than
comparison group (p <.0001) and the experimental group had significantly lower scores on blood sugar (DTX) than before and than comparison group (p<.0001). The findings support that which applied Orem’s nursing theory, can improve support to elderly patients and reduce the risk of perpheral arteral disease in elderly patients with diabetes melltitus and hypertension.
