The Image of Professional Nurses Perceived by Nursing Students

The importance of having a positive image in the nursing profession was still lacking of evidence regarding nursing students whose educated in the theory and practice to provide good treatment and care and providing good service according to social expectations. This study is the descriptive research aimed to 1) explore image of professional nurses as perceived by nursing students, 2) compare the actual and the ideal images of professional nurses as perceived by nursing students according to year of studying, and 3) compare the actual and the ideal images of professional nurses as perceived by nursing students between different year. The sample comprised of 1st to 4th years of nursing students at Boromarajonani College of Nursing Bangkok enrolled in 2561 BE academic year. Sample size calculation using the Krejcie and Morgan table based on population of 589 yield the total sample size of 256 with 64 each year. The sample was randomly selected using the lottery method without replacement. The instruments for collecting data were the perception of the actual and ideal images of professional nurse questionnaires which the content validity was .94. and the scale reliabilities were 0.981 and 0.984, respectively. Data was analyzed using descriptive statistic, Paired t-test and One-way ANOVA. Results showed that the actual and ideal images of professional nurses perceived by overall nursing students were at very good level (x ̅=201.62, SD. = 20.33; (x ̅= 202.97, SD.= 21.20). The mean scores of actual and ideal images of professional nurses perceived by 1st to 4th year nursing students were at very good level. The actual and ideal images of professional nurses perceived by the 1st and 2nd year nursing students were not different. Whereas, the ideal image of professional nurses perceived by 3rd and 4th year nursing students was higher than the actual image. Comparison of perceived images of professional nurses among 1st to 4th year nursing students were not different both ideal and actual images. (F(3)=1.111, p=.345; F(3)=2.218, p=.086 respectively)
This study revealed that the perceptions on images of professional nurse of nursing students increased according to years spent in nursing college. Arrange activities to promote good perception of professional nurse images start from the beginning of program will enhance students to appreciate the value of nursing profession.
