Nurses’ Roles in Promoting Personal Recovery among People with Chronic Schizophrenia in the Community
Main Article Content
Abstract
Schizophrenia is a chronic and severe mental disorder that often impairs social and occupational functioning. Although current treatment emphasizes early discharge and community reintegration, many individuals struggle to adapt, limiting their recovery.
This article aims to analyze nurses’ roles in promoting recovery among individuals with chronic schizophrenia in community settings, based on a recovery-oriented, person-centered, and empowerment approach. Nurses play a key role in enhancing patients’ self-care capacity through both clinical and psychosocial interventions, including promoting activities of daily living, supporting treatment adherence, strengthening self-management skills, providing social support, and fostering hope. They also engage in proactive community-based practices, such as home visits, case management, and collaboration with families and community networks, to support meaningful and sustainable recovery in the community.
Effective recovery requires collaboration among families, healthcare providers, service systems, and communities to help individuals set and achieve meaningful life goals.
