The Effects of a Self-Management Promotion Program Through Online Application on Pulmonary Rehabilitation in Patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease

Abstract

This quasi-experimental study employed a two-group pretest–posttest design to examine the effects of a self-management promotion program delivered through the LINE application on pulmonary rehabilitation. The sample consisted of 62 patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), aged 40 years and older, who attended the Respiratory Medicine Clinic. Participants were selected using purposive sampling and assigned to either an experimental group or a control group, with 31 participants in each group. The two groups were matched by sex, age, and type of inhaled medication used. Data were collected using a Peak Expiratory Flow (PEF) meter to assess pulmonary function and a self-management assessment questionnaire to monitor the intervention. The questionnaire demonstrated good internal consistency, with a Cronbach's alpha coefficient of .85. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, independent t-tests, and paired t-tests.


The results showed that, after participating in the self-management promotion program delivered through the LINE application, the experimental group had a significantly higher mean pulmonary function score (M = 342.90, SD = 129.23) than before the intervention (M = 244.84, SD = 85.16) (t = 7.85, p < .001). Furthermore, the experimental group demonstrated significantly better pulmonary function than the control group, which received usual nursing care (M = 269.68, SD = 92.97) (t = 2.56, p < .05).


The findings indicate that the self-management promotion program delivered through the LINE application was effective in improving pulmonary function among patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
