Perceived Nursing Competencies of Generation Y Charge Nurses Working in the Private Patient Division at a Tertiary Hospital in Bangkok

Abstract

The objectives of this descriptive research were: 1) to study perceived competency levels of Generation Y charge nurses working in the private patient division, and 2) to conduct a confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) to assess the model fit of the competency components of Generation Y charge nurses working. The research sample group consisted of 87 registered nurses of Generation Y, chosen through simple random sampling. The research instrument was a questionnaire assessing the personal data and nursing competencies of Generation Y charge nurses, for which the content validity index was .93 and the reliability was .88. Data collection took place from August 15 to September 2024. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and confirmatory factor analysis.  


The results of the research found that the overall perceived competency levels of Generation Y charge nurses was found to be at the highest level; and the results of confirmatory factor analysis of competencies of Generation Y charge nurses revealed 5 components: 1) leadership; 2) management and quality improvement; 3) communication and relationship building; 4) professional ethics, morals and law; and 5) health policy and environment. The competency model for Generation Y charge nurses was consistent with empirical data as follows: X2 = 7.770, df = 4, p = .100, X2 /df = 1.942, GFI = .969, AGFI = .883, RMR = .007, RMSEA = .105
