Effects of Self-efficacy Promoting Program on Maternal Behaviors in Preventing Recurrent Neonatal Jaundice and Serum Bilirubin Level of Infants Receiving Phototherapy
Main Article Content
Abstract
This quasi-experimental study, utilizing a two-group posttest-only design, aimed to compare maternal behaviors in preventing recurrent neonatal jaundice and serum bilirubin levels in infants receiving phototherapy between an experimental group and a control group. The experimental group received a self-efficacy promoting program, while the control group received routine nursing care. The sample consisted of mothers and their full-term newborns admitted to the obstetrics and gynecology ward and the pediatric ward at Ratchaphiphat Hospital, Medical Department, Bangkok. Participants were selected using convenience sampling. They were matched in pairs based on educational level and then randomly assigned to either group by drawing lots, resulting in 15 pairs per group. The research instruments consisted of the program to promote maternal competence and a questionnaire of maternal behaviors in preventing recurrent neonatal jaundice, with Cronbach’s alpha reliability at .95. Data were analyzed using an independent t-test.
The results showed that the mean score for maternal behaviors in preventing recurrent neonatal jaundice in the experimental group was significantly higher than that of the control group (t = 5.53, p < .001). Additionally, the mean bilirubin level in infants at follow-up was significantly lower in the experimental group compared to the control group (t = -4.04, p < .001).
These findings indicate that the self-efficacy promoting program is effective in enhancing maternal behaviors and reducing bilirubin levels in newborns. Nursing personnel involved in neonatal jaundice care are encouraged to implement this program to support mothers in preventing recurrence and improving neonatal outcomes.
