Abstract

This quasi-experimental research, a one-group pretest-posttest design, aimed to compare nurses' competency and attitude before and after participation in a program for developing nurses' competency and attitude in psychiatric critical patient care. The sample consisted of 40 registered nurses of Banlat Hospital who had worked with and provided nursing care for psychiatric critical patients, selected using simple random sampling. The research tools were questionnaires for assessing nurses' competency and attitude in psychiatric critical patient care, with Cronbach's alpha reliability coefficients of .93 and .96, respectively. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and a dependent t-test.

The results showed that nurses' competency and attitudes in caring for psychiatric critical patients were significantly higher after participating in the development program than before program attendance (t = 6.29 and 3.93, respectively; p < .01).

The findings should be used as a guideline for developing nursing competency and attitude, fostering self-confidence in registered nurses for psychiatric critical patient care and safe patient management for both patients and providers.
