The Effects of Coaching Program and LINE Application on Milk Production and Lactation in Mothers of Preterm infants
Main Article Content
Abstract
This quasi-experimental research study utilized a two-group pretest-posttest design to examine the effects of a coaching program combined with the LINE application on milk production and lactation in mothers of preterm infants. The study was conducted with 32 pairs of mothers and their preterm infants (born at <37 weeks gestation) admitted to the pediatric intensive care unit of a hospital in Northern Thailand. The participants were randomly assigned to either the control group (n = 16) or the experimental group (n = 16). The research instruments included a coaching program manual and the LINE application. Data were collected using a questionnaire comprising demographic information, an observational checklist for breast maintenance practices, and a milk measuring device. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and t-tests.
The findings revealed that, after participating in the program, the average score for maintaining breast milk in the experimental group was significantly higher than both the pre-intervention score and the score of the control group (t = 33.24, 12.75, p < .01, respectively). Additionally, on days 3 and 5, the mean milk volume in the experimental group was significantly greater than that of the control group (t = 5.04, 9.57, p < .01, respectively).
The study highlights the potential of integrating a coaching program with the LINE application as an effective strategy for supporting mothers of preterm infants. It is recommended that nurses caring for preterm infants consider implementing this program to develop and enhance the role of mothers in promoting successful lactation.
