Health Promoting Behavior among Nursing Students in a Public University
Main Article Content
Abstract
This cross-sectional survey research aimed to study health-promoting behaviors and the relationship between biosocial, psychological factors, and health-promoting behaviors among nursing students in a public university. The sample consisted of 260 nursing students from a public university in Bangkok, selected through simple random sampling. Data were collected using self-assessment questionnaires measuring self-esteem, happiness, and health-promoting behaviors, with content validity indices of .95, .93, and .90, respectively, and Cronbach's alpha reliability coefficients of .83, .89, and .77, respectively. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Chi-square tests, and Pearson correlation coefficients.
The results showed that the sample had a moderate level of self-esteem (M = 79.63, SD = 9.93), a high level of happiness (M = 4.45, SD = .52), and a moderate level of health-promoting behaviors (M = 84.90, SD = 10.37). Biosocial factors, including body mass index and adequacy of monthly expenses were significantly related to health-promoting behaviors (x2 = 11.55, 16.90; p < .05). Psychological factors, such as self-esteem and happiness, were positively correlated with health-promoting behaviors at a low level, with statistical significance at the .05 level (r = .18 and .27, respectively).
It is recommended that nursing education administrators and relevant stakeholders implement health promotion policies and design activities that enhance self-esteem and happiness among nursing students.
